HANDS OF HOPE

Hands of Hope is the group of churches organized by Kelvin and Joni Kurisu that sponsors the Lunch in the Park that we have been helping with. They also provide Thanksgiving and Christmas meals to the elderly, our police and firemen and women who work on those holidays, and anyone who is hungry and can come to the meals.

In addition, they sponsor outreaches to the elderly in the community. The March schedule is presented below. Please call or email Joni at 230-1571 or jokurisu@hotmail.com to let her know you are interested. There are five teams of people who participate to cover the five outreach programs, and she will add you to a team. Each outreach program includes singing, a short message, prayer and fellowship time. Meals are served at all outreach programs except the ARC, which is for persons living with disability and ATP whcih provides their own meals.

  • Sunday March 7, 12:30 - 2pm (including lunch) at Laiola and Wilikina Apartment buildings
  • Saturday March 13, 9:30-10:30am: ARC (no meal served) and 9:30 - 11am: Silvercrest (breakfast)

There is no charge for attending the 13 week session. All course material is provided by the Grace Moore Kimata Center. Attendees do not have to be a member of the church, in fact, if you know of someone outside of the church who could benefit by attending the session, please invite them by caling Jim Higa at 232-3992

    BOWLING OUTING

Due to the overwhelming request to "let's do it again really soon," we will be bowling on Sunday, March 14th at 4 p.m. at Schofield Bowling Center. In order to simplify the reservation and payment process at the bowling center, we are asking members to sign up and pay for their bowling ahead of time.

Please see Jim Higa to sign up and pay for your spot as soon as possible, as we will need to have a firm headcount to reserve enough lanes. We will be bowling for a 2-hour period again, and the fees will be, for military ID holders - $7 / adult and $6 / under 18; non ID holders - $8 / adult and $7 / under 18.

    OUTREACH COMMITTEE

A Tea "Restaurant" in Wahiawa? Yes, the Outreach Mission and Nurture Committee had a Valentine's Day fundraiser by having their guests dine and socialize in a lovely Tea "Restaurant." The basic social hall has been transformed into a garden atmosphere with plants, lights and beautifully decorated tables with lace trimmed table cloths. Words heard were "wow" and "how nice." The "Restaurant" is perfect to escape from stress and whether you are dining alone or with friends, it's a perfect ambience to be pampered by waitresses/waiters and indulge with tea, ono sandwiches, scones and sweets.

It was a lovely treat for everyone attending this function.

    CENTENNIAL COOKBOOK

Have you ever eaten a dish so delicious at one of our potluck, UMW/UMM events or aloha reception and wished you had the recipe for it? Our congregation is blessed with many talented cooks with great recipes. As part of the WUMC Centennial Celebration, the Cookbook Committee would like to publish a special Centennial Cookbook containing these treasured recipes.

The first step in making this cookbook a reality is to solicit your help. Please kokua by sharing your favorite recipe for possible inclusion in the Centennial Cookbook. We need recipes in all categories: appetizers, soups, salads, main dishes, desserts, etc., as well as healthy foods and ethnic dishes. Our goal is to have at least 100 recipes.

Recipes can be submitted to any cookbook committee member or by e-mailing junehiga@yahoo.com or wahiawaumc@protestant.com. Please include your name and contact information in case we need to contact you. If you would like to include a short comment with your recipe, such as "Grandma's favorite" please feel free to do so.

This will only be the 3rd cookbook WUMC has published in 100 years so it is long overdue. The Centennial Cookbook will be a wonderful personal legacy to leave for future generations at WUMC.

We sincerely thank you in advance for your participation and support. We urge you to send in your recipes as soon as you can.

    Mahalo,

    Centennial Cookbook Committee
June Higa, Janet Kanja, Lily Maeda, Edna Ng, and Susan Ramelb

    UNITED METHODIST WOMEN

On Sunday, March 7, at 3:30 pm, Church Women United will be meeting at Kailua Christian Church for the annual World Day of Prayer. This is another opportunity to widen our circle of friendship by worshiping with women from other churches.

Your District UMW team is now busy working with the Hawaii United Methodist Church Committee for Global Ministries in bringing you the 2010 Mission Festival on March 13, at our Susannah Wesley Community Center. The theme is "Hunger," both physical and spiritual. We have three guest presenters who will share about world hunger, local hunger, and our own spiritual hunger. Rev. Roby Correa will be using the book from last year's School of Christian Mission, Food and Faith, to guide us in filling our spiritual hunger. Don't forget to bring a can of food for Suzy's Pantry, which gives food to the hungry in their area.

Carolyn Steuer, Hawaii District UMW President

    UNITED METHODIST MEN

UMM are hosting a breakfast on Sunday, September 27, from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Give yourself a break and socialize with your church family. Pancakes are always on the menu as well as scrambled eggs and other goodies. Compliments of the United Methodist Men.

    WAHIAWA UMC PRESCHOOL

We raised our tuition to $635 a month effective January 1, 2009.

At our meeting on January 22, our director reported that we continue to have 18 children, but has received applications for 4 more to begin on February 1. These added children, plus the raise of tuition, should help our financial situation. This school year, which began on August 1, 2008, we have had an operating loss.

We thank Hiroshi Kojima for getting the spec plans needed for our parent group to be able to to get a building permit and proceed with installation of the canopy over the playground equipment. The parents raised the money themselves for the cost of the canopy and are donating the labor.

We were approved by Kamehameha Schools so families can send elegible Hawaiian children to our preschool and receive some financial aid from Kamehameha Schools to help cover the cost of their tuition.

    WMC YOUTH GROUP

We've been pretty busy since the start of the new year. Our first service project of the year was on February 8th, we put on a tea after church service. We set up one of the rooms in the social hall as a 'tea room' with seating for 40 using round and square tables, just like in a resturant. We had lots of help from our moms on the decorating of the tables. Lots of linens, crotchet tablecloths, cloth napkins. Each table had their own teapot! No paper plates or plastic spoons in this tea room! Chef NuOli mentored us the night before doing as much food prep work as we could. Sunday morning, with scones baking in the oven along with macadamia shortbread bars, Chef NuOli giuded us as we put together the tea sandwiches and dessert. It was an absolute hit! Our tips alone covered the cost of the food bills and the ticket sales ($401) was presented to our 100th Year Celebration planning committee! (that $1 was left over from our tips AFTER the food bills were paid!) Everyone is asking for the next tea!

In Feb. we also took part in serving lunch to the homeless at Fred Wright Park in Wahiawa. It made everyone feel thankful for our many blessings that we all too often take for granted.

We kicked off March with an afternoon potluck and a private showing of 'Ironman' in our youth room. We tried selling some of our trading cards at the church Rummage Sale the following Saturday. Not much takers, oh well. We'll try again in another venue.

YPC (Young People's Camp) at Mokuleia was attended by 3 of our youth. They reported nothing but fun, fun and more fun! This was a 'first time' youth camp for all three of them. We'll get them to write up a report for you. Our service project for March was to help pick up trash out at Kalaeloa. It wasn't as hard as we thought it would be. Many hands make lighter work! We try to do one service project each month along with a fun event. Come join us or just 'check us out'! We meet twice a month right after church in our youth room. We look forward to meeting you.

    FACE

F.A.C.E. (Faith Action for Community Equity) continues to be active, working on issues of adequate health care and affordable housing. Thank you to all who collected signatures on the Health Petition, and who donate to FACE by giving flowers on Sunday mornings.

We are grateful to Betty Ickes, who donates her time and flowers for your donation of $50 to FACE.

    SUNDAY ALOHA RECEPTION

    Thank You Sampler

After every Sunday worship service, we have an Aloha Reception. It is a wonderful opportunity to greet newcomers and to renew friendships. Receive a cool drink and a bite to eat and observe the smiles and fellowship taking place.

Your participation as a host for the Aloha Reception is a great way to celebrate a birthday, anniversary or any special occasion. Please look at the sign-up poster located in the narthex and fill in that open space with your name and the special occasion. Sign up early so you can get as close as possible to the date of that special occasion that you wish to celebrate.

You can host the Aloha Reception with a partner or if you want us to find a partner for you, please let us know and we will do that. If you are able to donate refreshments and choose to not host the Aloha Reception, please contact us.

A special Mahalo goes out to everyone who has donated refreshments or hosted the Aloha Reception. The Aloha Reception is an extension of the Wahiawa United Methodist Church Ohana's Aloha to visitors and regular church attendees.

    Thank you very much,
    June Higa
