100TH ANNIVERSARY UPDATE -- FIRST 100'S PROJECT COMPLETED!
In honor of WUMC's upcoming 100th Anniversary celebration, we started (and finished!) our very first 100's mission project. Thank you to all the people who provided us with get well cards for Ben Edwards during his stay at the Seattle Children's Hospital. All your loving cards and postcards, both handmade and store-bought, were numbered (1 through 100, of course) and mailed to Ben on a daily basis. The last 15 or so were actually "Welcome Home" cards which were handed to him when he returned to church worship service on June 20th. We gathered a total of 104 cards for Ben, and he said that he really enjoyed getting them and thinking of the people who sent them. Thanks again for participating in this project.
If you'd like to start a 100's project, please let Jim Higa or Genie Brown know -- we want to track all of them so we can include them in the program at our celebration. Get creative and have fun spreading the 100's of ways our congregation can impact the community.
WE SOLVED THE MYSTERY!
The theme of this years vacation bible school was Good News Clues. Vacation Bible School took place on June 9th, 10th and 11th at the church. We started every night out with a delicious dinner prepared by different committees. Wednesday night the United Methodist Men served spaghetti, Thursday the United Methodist Women served pizza and Friday the Outreach committee served fish sticks and pasta with broccoli. All of the meals combination of different aged children and youth.
The first night the story was about Adam and Eve and the creation of the world. Bob and Doris Lee were our story tellers for the night, and did a wonderful job in decorating the paper take home bags for all of the goodies the kids got during vacation bible school, as well as decorating cups to plant seeds in. Angie Johnston and Ellen Wakabayashi did a great job leading the children in their craft time, and helped to inspire a lot of creativity!! Genie Brown lead the games with Paul Kulp assisting her. The game for that night was a dirt relay, and the kids had alot of fun trying to scoop the dirt into their buckets the fastest. We closed the evening with a wonderful balloon popping activity and singing lead by Rosie Dowson, and a yummy jello snack brought by Susan Ramelb.
The story for Thursday night was the story of the Prodigal Son. The story was told by our "teenage" helpers, Atina Pascua and Bob Lormand. They dressed as teenagers to help relate the story to the kids better. The craft for the night was cloth penny pouches which were decorated with fabric paint and left to dry over night. The games for the night were a relay race course where the kids had to partner up and work together. They also had to try to see just how many people they could fit in a very tiny space. Many of the groups had some very creative ways to get everyone in their space. Rosie lead the group in more songs and a penny cleaning activity. Susan made another wonderful shave ice snack for everyone.
Our final night together was the story of Easter, and how Jesus died and rose again so that we would be forgiven. Leo Pascua also helped to teach the children the songs. We made cross bookmarks and puzzles in arts and crafts, and had a waiter relay race in games. The story for Friday night was told by two very special mice, played by Shauree Kurch and Marcia Peterson. We closed the night with the presentation of certificates and a delicious pudding snack from Susan.
A big Mahalo to everyone that helped out with leading our groups around, Marcia Peterson, Keith and Teli Isaacson, Mary and Chris Aguinaldo, Shauree Kurch, Betty Ickes, and Leo Pascua. I also had a lot of help planning and making everything run smoothly, Vacation Bible School would not have happened without the help of Rosie Dowson, Dina Cornwall, Shauree Kirsch and Genie Brown, a Big Mahalo to all of you. Last but certainly not least a very big and special mahalo to Alyssa Edwards who was my partner in crime and co-chair for VBS. Thank you to everyone who helped out and thank you to everyone who donated items from our wish list.

YOUTH OVERNIGHTER IN WUMC'S SANCTUARY
After Vacation Bible School, the youth had their first sleep over this year. It was also my first as one of their youth leaders. The youth, Pastor Fran, Leo, David, and I sang songs that we all wanted to sing. They were mostly Christmas songs! Ha Ha Ha. We ended the evening in prayer, or so we thought. The "kids" talked (well the girls mostly) and the boys did boy things. It was really great. About midnight, there was a little excitement outside. Someone popped a firecracker. It was really loud. We don't know who did it. It was investigated and someone by the trash bins set it off. It "spooked' some of us because we weren't expecting anything like that!.
Sleeping in the Church was really COOL. The kids were really COOL and that is why the sleepover was great . . . they made it great! I hope we can do this again.

CENTENNIAL COOKBOOK
Have you ever eaten a dish so delicious at one of our potluck, UMW/UMM events or aloha reception and wished you had the recipe for it? Our congregation is blessed with many talented cooks with great recipes. As part of the WUMC Centennial Celebration, the Cookbook Committee would like to publish a special Centennial Cookbook containing these treasured recipes.
The first step in making this cookbook a reality is to solicit your help. Please kokua by sharing your favorite recipe for possible inclusion in the Centennial Cookbook. We need recipes in all categories: appetizers, soups, salads, main dishes, desserts, etc., as well as healthy foods and ethnic dishes. Our goal is to have at least 100 recipes.
Recipes can be submitted to any cookbook committee member or by e-mailing junehiga@yahoo.com or wahiawaumc@protestant.com. Please include your name and contact information in case we need to contact you. If you would like to include a short comment with your recipe, such as "Grandma's favorite" please feel free to do so.
This will only be the 3rd cookbook WUMC has published in 100 years so it is long overdue. The Centennial Cookbook will be a wonderful personal legacy to leave for future generations at WUMC.
We sincerely thank you in advance for your participation and support. We urge you to send in your recipes as soon as you can.
Mahalo,
Centennial Cookbook Committee

FACE
F.A.C.E. (Faith Action for Community Equity) continues to be active, working on issues of adequate health care and affordable housing. Thank you to all who collected signatures on the Health Petition, and who donate to FACE by giving flowers on Sunday mornings.
We are grateful to Betty Ickes, who donates her time and flowers for your donation of $50 to FACE.
SUNDAY ALOHA RECEPTION
After every Sunday worship service, we have an Aloha Reception. It is a wonderful opportunity to greet newcomers and to renew friendships. Receive a cool drink and a bite to eat and observe the smiles and fellowship taking place.
Your participation as a host for the Aloha Reception is a great way to celebrate a birthday, anniversary or any special occasion. Please look at the sign-up poster located in the narthex and fill in that open space with your name and the special occasion. Sign up early so you can get as close as possible to the date of that special occasion that you wish to celebrate.
You can host the Aloha Reception with a partner or if you want us to find a partner for you, please let us know and we will do that. If you are able to donate refreshments and choose to not host the Aloha Reception, please contact us.
A special Mahalo goes out to everyone who has donated refreshments or hosted the Aloha Reception. The Aloha Reception is an extension of the Wahiawa United Methodist Church Ohana's Aloha to visitors and regular church attendees.
Thank you very much,
June Higa
